Kick off
The graduate schools at the faculties of Architecture, Industrial Design and Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science have officially been kicked off at September 22nd. All PhDs that start their PhD at these faculties will officially been enrolled in the Graduate School from now on. Other faculties will follow on January 1st.
Outcomes of the PhD survey
Last spring a survey was sent to all PhDs at the university with questions regarding their opinion on facilities, supervision and support during their PhD. In general, we seem rather happy with our PhD, giving it a 7.2 on average. Approximately one third of all PhDs experience a delay and 12.6% says that they have experienced problems with their supervision. The results have been analyzed for the entire university and separately for each faculty. The outcomes will be published on the new Graduate School website www.graduateschool.tudelft.nl

In addition to a promotor and daily supervisor, the Graduate School is going to prescribe that all PhD students are assigned to a mentor. The mentor is there to advice you on the process of your PhD and to safeguard that you can finish your thesis in time. To make sure that your mentor gives independent advice, he or she will come from a different section than your own. All mentors will have a PhD themselves to make sure that they know what they are talking about.
The ‘climate scan’ that was send to PhD in early summer has been filled in by no less that 891 PhD students. The outcomes will soon be published.

This fall, the first PhD students will start within the framework of the Graduate School. The faculties that adopt the framework first are Industrial Design (IO), Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EWI) and Architecture (BK). The other faculties will follow in January, 2012.

With the start of the Graduate School, a Career Counsellor for PhDs is appointed in the Career Centre of TU Delft. The Career Counsellor offers personal counselling and advice on different career related issues. Support can be given to PhDs who must decide on the next career step that best suits their ambitions, strengths and capacities. In order to decide on the position, PhDs are often faced with questions such as: should I continue my career in science? Do I want to do this in or outside the Netherlands? Would it be possible to find a job in an international company? How can I best present my PhD education to have a better chance for a career in business? But other questions might come up too, for instance: how to increase my motivation and/or reduce stress, or how to combine my PhD with family life?
